Robert G. Owen, Jr.

Robert G. Owen Jr. passed away Monday evening, January 5th at Lakeshore Otterbein in Lakeside, Ohio at the age of 82. His partner of 46 years, Joann T. Wagner was at his side. Robert (fondly known to generations of Port Clintonites as The Bear) was born on Feb. 4, 1932, in Tuscan Arizona, to the gunsmith Robert G. Owen and his wife, Marjorie (Pope). Robert was preceded in death by his sister Marjorie Espejo of Port Clinton. Previously employed in the finance departments of both the Port Clinton Standard Products Company and Lake Fish Company in Sandusky, Robert also worked as a brick layer, commercial fisherman, and was an avid punter for over 60 years. One of the oldest members of the Port Clinton Elks, Robert leaves behind a potent and diverse legacy. But his curiosity, his ability to engage people in easy conversation, his enduring knowledge and remarkable memory were his greatest gifts. Robert's ardent and varied interests included duck hunting, opera, theatre trips to New York City and Ohio State football games. He was also an outdoor enthusiast and had a lifelong passion for nature and wildlife. Along with Joann, he is survived by his niece and nephew, Roberta Espejo of Wakeman, Ohio and Owen Espejo of NYC. Neidecker Le Veck & Crosser is in charge of the cremation and burial but there will be an Elks service beginning at 2pm on January 16th at the Port Clinton Elks Lodge followed by a celebration of Robert. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Robert's name at Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky OH.
