Richard S. Hartley, 96, of Lakeside and formerly of Troy, Ohio died Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at the Jane Baker House of Otterbein North Shore Retirement Community, Lakeside, OH. He was born August 6, 1918 in Troy, Ohio the son of William H. and Derry (Perrine) Hartley. He graduated from Troy High School in 1936 and graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1940 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. While attending OWU he was chosen as a Phi Beta Kappa honor student and was a member of ODK, senior men's service honorary. In 1942 he received a Bachelor of Science degree from MIT. He served three and a half years as an officer in the United States Navy. He was a torpedo officer aboard the destroyer, U.S.S. Beale in the South Pacific and later was sent back to MIT by the Navy where he invented a servo-mechanism for changing the speed of a torpedo and he earned a master's degree at MIT in mechanical engineering. In October of 1942 he married Dorothea Heckman of Wilkinsburg, PA. Following World War II, Mr. Hartley pursued his engineering career with Hobart Corp. in Troy, Ohio for 34 years retiring in 1980. He was manager of food, retailing and processing equipment product engineering for the company, designing commercial mixers, grinders and slicers. In 1979 he received the Troy Jaycees Community Service Award for his active community involvement. He served 40 years on the Troy Miami County Public Library Board and was president of the board for 28 years during which time a new library was built. He served four years on State of Ohio Library Board. He was also a president of the THOU board for twenty five years. Mr. Hartley was a lifelong member of Troy First United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, church treasurer, and member of the Board of Trustees, Board of Stewards and the Finance Committee. He was chairman of both the Cub Scouts and Boys Scouts Committees. For nine years Mr. Hartley served on the Board of Trustees of the Lakeside Association and served two terms as president. He was one of the founding fathers of Otterbein North Shore Retirement Community where he has served several terms on the board. He enjoyed skiing, sailing, model railroading, oil painting, traveling and antique cars. Surviving are his wife, Dorothea Heckman Hartley; daughters: Doranne (William) Coad of Richmond Hill, GA, Sandra (David) Geiger of Johns Creek, GA; son: Thomas (Karen) Hartley of Hertford, N.C.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and sister: Helen Hartley Kuntz of Madison, WI. Private family services will be held at a later date.
