It is with heavy hearts that we inform the passing of Phillip Lewis Shingledecker on Feb 28,
2024, at the age of 78, at his home surrounded by family. Phil, born on April 16, 1945, as the
youngest son to Lewis & Edith Shingledecker, was raised in Springfield, Ohio where he
graduated from Springfield South High School. Always loving the Lakeside-Marblehead area
and Lake Erie, Phil moved there in 1965 where he would begin his years of public service. For
15 years, Phil served in a variety of roles, including road officer, dispatcher, volunteer EMT and
volunteer firefighter. The highlight of his public service career came when he was selected as
the inaugural Chief of Police in Marblehead under Mayor Robert (Bob) Bird. Over the next 8
years, Phil dedicated himself to building and establishing the first Police Department in
Marblehead, focused on serving the community. In 1979, Phil made the hard decision to leave
the role and moved to Davis-Besse where he was an active member of the Nuclear Security
Police, from there retiring in 2005.
Phil, preceded in death by his older brother William, is survived by his wife Betty, daughter
Cheryl, son David and wife Jill Shingledecker, and grandchildren Brandon, Samantha, Hollie and
Joseph.
