Orville D. Payne, 91, of Port Clinton, Ohio died Thursday, June 10, 2010, at Otterbein North Shore Retirement Center, Lakeside, Ohio. He was born in Port Clinton, Ohio on October 26, 1918, to Harold and Emma (Miller) Payne. Both parents died at an early age and he and his sister, Violet were raised by their grandparents, Dennis and Delphia Payne. He graduated from Port Clinton High School in 1936 where he was active in all sports. He worked for Standard Products and played on their basketball team. Later he was employed at Ohio Public Service and Ohio Edison Company for 15 years. On August 17, 1940, he married Irma Ruth Yoder of Tiffin, Ohio, in the Port Clinton Trinity United Methodist Church, where he was still currently a member. Orville spent two years in the U.S. Submarine Service during World War II. In 1952 he started his own construction business, building not only in Port Clinton but in surrounding towns. He developed the Edgewood Acres Plat which included 12th Street and apartments thereon. After 23 years (1975) he retired and spent the following years between Port Clinton, Ohio and Sarasota, Florida. His wife, Irma, of 54 years died on May 10, 1994. On January 7, 1995, he married a former classmate and Port Clintonite, Lois Balduf Conklin, and she survives. Always an avid golfer, he was a long-time member of the Catawba Island Club on Catawba Island, Ohio, and was a founding member of the Bent Tree Club in Sarasota. Survivors include his sons: Jack H. and wife Susan Zeis Payne, of Tiffin; Robert E. and wife Terris Fusko Payne, of Gypsum, OH; and Thomas A. Payne, of Key West; two step sons: William H. Conklin, Raleigh, North Carolina, and Craig W. Conklin, Ft. Myers, Florida; grandchildren: John Lockwood and wife Melissa Crohen Payne and their children: Jacob Lockwood Payne and Benjamin Crohen Payne, all of Delaware, Ohio; Christopher Mark Payne, of Tiffin; William Robert Payne and his son: Brandon Michael Payne, of Oak Harbor; and Daniel Lee Payne of Port Clinton. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 from 10 am Noon at the Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, 1124 Fulton Street, Port Clinton, where funeral services will be held at Noon with The Reverend Bruce Batchelor-Glader officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery with military honors being given by members of VFW Post #2480, Port Clinton. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, Port Clinton or to the charity of one's choice.
