Mary Louise Kania, 94, of Oak Harbor, Ohio, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at Riverview Health Care Campus, Oak Harbor. Born on February 25, 1921, in Martin, Ohio, to the late Joseph and Marie Horak, she married her beloved husband, Walter A. Kania, on April 1, 1945, in Hayward, California. Mary attended Harris-Elmore High School prior to working various positions at Standard Products, Erie Army Depot, GL Products Company, The Ayling & Reichert Company, Myers Grocery, Eckrich Company, and was Secretary/Treasurer and Co-Owner of Jim's Trucking. She took pride in her family and home and was an avid supporter for all her grandchildren's academic pursuits and sporting events. A 68-year member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Oak Harbor, Mary served as President of the Rosary-Altar Society, assisted with bereavement meals and apple pie bakes, sold tickets at festivals, worked for the church credit union and packed clothing for the needy. Memberships included V.F.W. Post #8732, American Legion Post #114, Port Clinton Women of the Moose, and the Ottawa County Farm Bureau. She volunteered her time for Benton Township United Way and the American Cancer Society. Mary served the Village of Rocky Ridge as a council member for 30 years, including the office of Treasurer for ten years. She loved traveling with family and friends, playing cards, and was an accomplished bowler. Listening and dancing to polka music was a life-long passion, relating to her Czech heritage. Mary will be dearly missed by her daughters Jane Whitaker of Oak Harbor and Sandra (Wayne) Butzin of Rocky Ridge; son James (Marcia) Kania of Graytown; sisters Catherine Rollheiser of Brigham City, Utah, and Helen Swope of Toledo; grandchildren: Janice (J.T.) Reece, Pamela (Craig) Jess, Michael (Nicole) Butzin, Shelley Whitaker, Christy Whitaker, Mark Whitaker, Patrick (Megen) Kania, Teresa Kania; great- grandchildren: Jalen/ Jeryn/ Jakobe Reece, Jacob/Elizabeth Butzin, Andrew Whitaker, Jack Gleckler, Cuper/Macie Kania. Mary is also survived by her sisters- in- law and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband Walter in January of 1985, brothers Joseph Horak and Frank Horak; sisters Anne Tabbert and Agnes Myerholtz, and son- in- law Ralph Whitaker. Visitation will be Monday from 2-7:30pm at the Crosser Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Oak Harbor Chapel where A Parish Wake Service will begin at 7:30pm at the Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at 11am at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Oak Harbor with the Rev. Timothy F. Ferris celebrant. Burial will follow in Salem Township Union Cemetery, Oak Harbor.
