John W. Foust, 83, of Oak Harbor, OH, died Wednesday afternoon at the University of Toledo Medical Center. He was born in Bay Bridge, OH on March 31, 1923 to the late David & Florence (Schelle) Foust. John was a resident of the Erie County Children’s Home until he was 13, when he was taken to the farm home of John & Laura Klaholz near Huron, OH, where he helped tend dairy cattle and assisted on the farm. He attended Huron schools where he ran track and was a member of the 6 man football team. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943, where he was a Seaman 1st class. John served at Great Lakes and Minneapolis, and was attached to the Navy Air Corps at Foreman Field near Ft. Lauderdale. On March 28, 1952, he married the former Laura M. Schafer at First Reformed Church (U.C.C.) in Sandusky. John worked at various factories in the Sandusky area, and then moved to Oak Harbor. He worked as a school custodian in Port Clinton and Elmore, and also drove school bus. For many years, John worked for the National Bank of Oak Harbor, from where he retired. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Oak Harbor, where he served on the church council, and was a former coach of the church softball team. Active in Masonic organizations, John was a 50 year member of Oak Harbor Lodge #495, F. a member of Oak Harbor Chapter #162, R.A.M.; and was a Past Patron of the former Oak Harbor Chapter #131, O.E.S. and was a member of Fremont Chapter #133, O.E.S. He was also a member of the John A. Fader Post #114 of the American Legion. John enjoyed playing softball, bowling, gardening, and camping, but most especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Laura; sons, Thomas (Susan) Foust, Peru, IL, Timothy (Karen) Foust, and Ted (Donna) Foust, both of Oak Harbor; daughters, Kris Lagger, Toledo, OH, Joan (Terry) Kline, and Jane (Jeff) Myerholtz, both of Oak Harbor; grandchildren, Molly, Tony, Tanner, Hannah, Stephanie, Jaclyn, Jonathan, Gregory, Catherine, Kevin, and Stacy; and a great-grandson, Troy. He was preceded in death by his parents, his foster parents, John & Laura Klaholz; brothers, David, Carl, and Calvin Foust, foster sister, Arlene (Klaholz) Bright, and foster brother, Junior Klaholz. The family will receive friends from 2-9 P.M. Friday at the Crosser Funeral Home, Oak Harbor, where Masonic services will be held at 7:00 P.M. Friday. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Oak Harbor, with the Rev. David A. Voll officiating. Interment will be in Elliston Cemetery, Elliston, OH. Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of Oak Harbor Masonic Lodge; the Ohio Veteran’s Home, or the Organ Fund of St. Paul United Church of Christ.
