Herbert Katko, 87, of Elmore, OH, died Sunday, May 15, 2016 at St. Clare Commons, Perrysburg, OH. He was born in on November 7, 1928, the son of Frank & Mary (Hajdu) Katko. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Herb served in Korea during the Korean War. Herb was a teacher for many years at the former Harris-Elmore Schools, Elmore, and Penta Career Center, Perrysburg, where he taught government and history. In later years, he was also an inspector for the Sanitary Engineering Department of Ottawa County. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Elmore, American Legion Post #279, Elmore, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8732, Oak Harbor. Herb was also a member of the Elmore Kiwanis and the former Portage Lodge, F. & A.M., Elmore, and enjoyed woodworking and gardening. On December 26, 1955, he married the former Irene M. Legany, and she preceded him in death on January 21, 2013 after nearly 58 years of marriage. Herb is survived by his sons, Allan (Anna) Katko, Elmore, and Dr. Jeffrey (Tamara) Katko, Perrysburg; son-in-law, Burt Wagner; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene; his daughter, Alice Wagner, grandson, Blake; brother, Dr. John A. Katko, and sister, Ilona Katko. Friends may call from 2-8 P.M. Friday at Crosser Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Elmore-Genoa Chapel, 19550 West State Route 51., where the family will be present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday at St. John's United Church of Christ, 448 E. Rice St., Elmore. Rev. Margaret R. Mills will officiate, and interment will be in Harris-Elmore Union Cemetery, Elmore with American Legion Post #279 and V.F.W. Post #8732 conducting graveside rites.
