To Run Tuesday and Wednesday George W. Fabian, 68, of Oak Harbor passed away peacefully at home on May 28, 2016 from the debilitating effects of both COPD and Arthritis. He was under the care of Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. George was born August 13, 1947 in Oak Harbor, OH to George and June (Miles) Fabian who preceded him in death. He graduated from Salem-Oak Harbor High School in 1965 an then went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps for 6 years. While in the military he was stationed overseas at Okinawa, the Philippines, and Vietnam. He served 2 tours of duty in Vietnam during the war. While in the military he became a certified Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Technician. After leaving the military, he continued his education and earned a Bachelor's Degree at Bowling Green State University and the attended Law school at the University of Toledo. In 1977, he began his career as a Probation Officer and Bailiff for the Ottawa County Court of Common Pleas. He had the honor, opportunity and pleasure of working for Judge Donald Wargowsky, Judge James Thierry, and Judge Paul Moon. He retired in 2001 having served in this capacity for 24 years. While he was in the Marine Corps, and serving stateside, he met and married the love of his life Lorraine Lighthall. They enjoyed 46 years together as husband and wife, and she survives. As a teen, George attained the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts and because he knew how much scouting had influenced him, he also encouraged his sons to be Boy Scouts. He was a Scout Leader for 2 years when his sons were Webelos. George also coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball for his son's teams; attended their soccer, baseball, football and wrestling activities when they were in Jr. and Sr. High School. He was always available during off-seasons to drive them to baseball camps and wrestling tournaments. George was elected Democratic Central Committee Member in Ottawa County for several years. During that time he also was the Ottawa County Chairperson for the Gubernatorial Campaign of Richard Celeste. He was also a member of the VFW Post in Port Clinton, OH. George loved sports, whether it was watching the Detroit Tigers, going fishing, camping, or hiking in the woods. He also loved traveling to different places. Whenever he took a trip or went exploring nature, he looked on each new activity as "a great adventure". He shared his love of nature and these activities with his wife, sons, and other family and friends. Now he's off on another "great adventure" to be with friends and family who have passed and gone before. Survivors include his wife Lorraine of Oak Harbor; sons: Wesley (Alene) Fabian of Whitmore Lake, MI and Miles Fabian of Oak Harbor; brothers: Miles (Connie) Fabian of Oak Harbor, OH and Jan (Susan) Fabian of New Bern, NC; grandsons: Sidney and Tyler Fabian; many nieces and nephews and their children, and his brothers and sistersin-law who live in Ohio, Florida, and California. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Paul Fabian, and sister Margaret Lenke. Visitation will be Thursday from 2-8pm at the Crosser Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Oak Harbor Chapel. A Remembrance Service will begin at 11am on Friday, June 3, 2016 at the Funeral Home. Entombment will be in the Salem Township Union Cemetery Mausoleum, Oak Harbor. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, American Diabetes Association, or a charity of the donor's choice.
