George Mahlon Massie, 88 of Port Clinton, passed away Saturday, June 26, 2010 at Riverview Health Care Campus. He was born Jan. 27, 1922 in Cincinnati, OH, the son of George and Lillie (Long) Massie. He leaves a legacy of social service, integrity, generosity, and good humor to his family, many friends and acquaintances. Mr. Massie served his country heroically in World War II as a rifleman with the 330th Infantry in the United States Army. He achieved the rank of Tech Sergeant and saw many combat missions including the Battle of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. A recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, among many other military honors and recognitions, he was proud to serve his county and could recall vivid memories of his wartime experiences even in his aging years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 113 and the Disabled American Veterans. After being honorably discharged on Nov. 14, 1945, he returned to Byington, OH where he married Roxie Massie on Feb. 23, 1946. They welcomed five children into the world and settled in Port Clinton. George was a dedicated father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, a fisherman, and an arrowhead collector belonging to the Archaeological Society of Ohio. He held a special place in his heart for animals, particularly squirrels, birds, and his grand-dogs. He enjoyed tending to his rose bushes and was a loyal Tuesday morning prayer breakfast attendee at the Trinity United Methodist Church. Mr. Massie never missed a day of work as a kiln operator for U.S. Gypsum, retiring in 1984. His family and friends will miss him and his adventuresome tales, particularly his fishing tales, stories from the war, and the real story behind the pinky and ring fingers on his left hand. Surviving are his wife: Roxie; daughter: Linda Molnar of Port Clinton a loving caregiver with whom he lived for the past five years; son: Loren Massie of Louisville, KY; sister: Nancy Questchke of Port Clinton; grandchildren: Nicole Schuster, Jana Molnar, Patrick Massie, Brian Massie, Jessica Wehrle, and Beth Hennen; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sons: Mahlon Massie and Cecil Massie, daughter: Austa Kay Massie; granddaughter: Cara Hurt; sister: Anita Massie; brothers: Bill and Floyd Massie. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, July 4th at 2:00 PM at Trinity United Methodist Church in Port Clinton. Family and friends may arrive at 1:00 PM. Memorial contributions can be made to Stein Hospice and The American Cancer Society.
