Donald Epke, age 95, passed away on October 18, 2017 at Riverview Nursing Home, Oak Harbor with his children at his side. He was born on August 16, 1922 in Wood County, Ohio to Frederick and Relief Roberts Epke. Don was a veteran of the United States Army and served our country in World War II from 1942 until 1945. He fought in North Africa and Europe, including in the Battle of Normandy. In one battle, an enemy bullet hit his gun while he was holding it and broke it in two. Before being drafted, Don worked at Erie Proving Grounds where he met his future wife, Helen Geldine. On December 29, 1945, they were married, and she preceded him in death on May 15, 1974. Following military service, Don settled in the Port Clinton area and worked as a mechanic. In addition to his regular work, Don always had projects going on. He farmed and also had an excavating business. He restored old tractors and antique cars. His 1927 Ford Model T touring car was a project he built from the ground up over the course of many years. Don will be greatly missed. He is survived by his twins, son Dennis (Jamie) Epke and daughter Denise (Russell) Schifferly; grandchildren and step grandchildren Jill (Sean) Kozlok, Jennifer (Frank) Wagner, Annalise Schifferly, Allison Beard, Amanda Beard, Micah (Laura) Jackson, Erin (Andy) Bryan, and Nathan (Kara) Jackson; great grandchildren and step great grandchildren, daughter-in-law Diane Epke; along with nieces, nephews, and some very dear friends. He was preceded in death by wife Helen, son Larry, and daughter Deanna as well as his sister Sara Parsons and two brothers Bill and Paul Epke. Also important in Don's life after the loss of his wife was June Cox, as well as her family in Maine. Visitation will be Friday from 2-8pm at the Crosser Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Elmore- Genoa Chapel. Funeral Services will begin at 11am Saturday, October 21, 2017 at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Elliston Cemetery, Elliston, OH. Memorial contributions may be made to God's Pit Crew (Godspitcrew.org) or to a charity of the donor's choice.
