Loren Hathaway Trautman

November 22, 1918 — April 9, 2015

Loren Hathaway Trautman, 96, of Elmore, OH died Thursday, April 9, 2015 at his home. He was born in Elmore, Ohio to Blain and Hazel Hathaway on November 22, 1918. Thirty-Six days later his mother died a victim of the 1918 worldwide influenza epidemic. Orphaned two years later after his father's death, he was raised and eventually adopted by Harry and Susan Trautman. He graduated from Harris Elmore High School, attended Miami University Oxford Ohio, University of Toledo and graduated from the University of Michigan. He was a Second Lieutenant Junior class, serving as a Navy pilot in World War II. He served with both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets, and was awarded two air medals. In 1946, he married Annette Margaret Willett and she survives. He was an owner/partner for 35 years in Brandes & Trautman Inc. located in Elmore, Ohio. In retirement, he served on the Ottawa County Red Cross advisory board, Harris Elmore Library Board, St. Johns UCC Council, Phoenix Lodge #123 F. & A. M. For 17 years, he was a volunteer business counselor for SCORE (Service Core of Retired Executives). He was the last living member charter member of Elmore Kiwanis club that was formed June 15, 1949. He was a member of St. Johns United Church of Christ in Elmore Ohio, Phoenix Masonic Lodge, and Zenobia Shrine. Hobbies included golf, fishing, snow skiing, collecting rare books, gardening, traveling and vacationing in Florida. He is survived by wife Annette of Elmore Ohio and son Douglas of Jackson Georgia. He was preceded in death by son David, adoptive parents Harry and Susan Trautman, brother Kermit Hathaway, sisters Hope Kent, Audrey Kuhlman-Thober, and Florence Vogelman-Pionke. A Memorial Service will begin at 11am Monday, April 13, 2015 at St. John's United Church of Christ, Elmore, with the family to receive friends beginning at 10am. Burial will be in Harris- Elmore Union Cemetery with Military Services provided by American Legion Post 279 of Elmore. Memorials may be made to Harris Elmore Public Library and/or St John's United Church of Christ Elmore Ohio. Crosser Funeral Home & Cremation Services is in charge of the arrangements for the family.
