Clarence E. "Hook" Crowe, 94, of the Vineyard on Catawba, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, January 12, 2015 at Edgewood Manor Nursing Center in Port Clinton, Ohio. He was born December 20, 1920 in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, the only son of the late William and Maude (Williams) Crowe. When Clarence was age 10, the William Crowe family moved from Canada to Detroit, Michigan. Clarence grew up in Detroit, married Gerda Woischke in 1940 and they later moved with their children to Put-in-Bay, Ohio. They have three daughters who survive: Sharon (Leon) Mann, Whitehouse, Ohio; Linda (David) Frederick, Put-in-Bay; and Kathleen (William) Brown, Lima, Ohio. Other survivors include eight dear grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and loving nieces and nephews. Clarence was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gerda in 1989; his parents; and four younger sisters: Helen Grohola, Delores Giannini, Mary Ann Blackett, and infant Jean. For fifty years, Clarence worked for Miller Boat Line at Put-in-Bay where his nickname "Hook" was born and thrived. He retired twice. In 1992, Clarence met Anne Heineman, originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, whom he married in 1993 at Put-in-Bay and she survives. Clarence was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Port Clinton. Clarence always enjoyed many interests and hobbies which included family and friends, travel, skilled woodworking and furniture repair, cards, bowling, billiards and building models. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2015 from 2-5pm at the Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, 1124 Fulton Street, Port Clinton, Ohio. On Friday, May 8, 2015, prayers will begin at 9:30am at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 414 Madison Street, Port Clinton, with Father John C. Missler officiating. Immediately following the services, family and friends are then invited to a time of fellowship and luncheon to be held at the Vineyard on Catawba Community Center. Following the luncheon, for those who would like to attend the burial on Put-In-Bay, all are invited to go directly to the Miller Ferry for either a 12:30 or 1:30pm ferry departure. Burial is scheduled for 2pm at Mapleleaf Cemetery on Put-In-Bay. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Stein Hospice, Edgewood Manor Nursing Center, or Immaculate Conception School. Gratitude is extended to Stein Hospice, Edgewood Manor, and Magruder Hospital and Dr. Christopher Stranathan for their exceptional care, support, and concern for this dear man.
